After a tough three-game stretch against the likes of Alabama, Arkansas and Auburn, I have Ole Miss at 6-2, with losses to Alabama and Auburn. A win over Louisiana Lafayette will bump the Rebels to 7-2. The Ragin Cajuns finished 6-6 last year, but included in that record was a win over Kansas State. L-LA can sneak up on people, but their offensive line is young and their offense overall is lacking. Against LSU and Nebraska, the Cajuns lost by a combined 86-3. There's no reason to expect significant improvement from that team. Ole Miss should win this game easily and rest players in preparation for Tennessee, LSU and Mississippi State.

Prediction: Ole Miss 49, Louisiana Lafayette 7.

Quarterback Race: It will be interesting to see whether Houston Nutt names a starter this weekend after Saturday night's scrimmage, and if so, who? I'm predicting Nathan Stanley to get the starting nod for the opener. No matter how this thing shakes out, Stanley and Masoli are sure to play, and it won't surprise me if Randall Mackey plays, too.

Cowbells = Dollar Bills: Well I got to the bottom of  Mississippi State's "Ring Responsibly" campaign. Ringing a cowbell "responsibly" is to ring the cowbell during timeouts, after scores, and at halftime. The SEC set fines for violations of its artificial noise rule at $5,000 (1st violation), $25,000 (2nd violation) and $50,000 (3rd violation) per game. My take: Whenever 50,000 people are together, somebody, or some group of people, is going to ruin it for everybody else. Mississippi State better get the cash reserve fund going. I'm thinking $300,000 should cover it.
