For the most part 2011 was not what anyone would call kind to Ole Miss athletics.
Okay, let's not beat around the bush here - 2011 sucked. Bad. From yet another NIT berth in basketball, to a disappointing 10th place SEC finish in baseball, to 2-10 in football, all in all 2011 was just a really, really crappy year. So when the year comes to a merciful end on Saturday night I plan to imbibe champagne and treat it like a stick of dynamite on all those terrible 2011 memories - hangover be damned. Indeed, I'll be far more happy to bid 2011 adieu than I will to welcome 2012. You see, I don't know what 2012 will bring (it really can't be any worse), but I do know what happened this past year, and it can't disappear from view fast enough. Ole Miss was swept by Mississippi State in the big three sports. LSU took a knee with five minutes to go on the clock. I saw an Ole Miss-MSU basketball game that was nothing more than a "coming out party" for Renardo Sidney. Ole Miss baseball coach Mike Bianco fielded his worst team in 11 years as coach. Houston Nutt hit the summer media and booster club circuit boasting about two Cotton Bowls and telling Ole Miss fans they were silly for worrying about that little 4-8 rebuilding year and losses to Jacksonville State, Vanderbilt and Moo U. Then the worst football season in Ole Miss history happened, complete with all the drama of watching an administration behave as though it was more concerned about saving face than doing the right thing, and then watching all that drama get tied up nicely with a big bow by some of the most lackluster, pathetic performances these eyes have ever seen on a football field to finish a season that left me wanting like never before for a giant refund from the ticket office only to hear ticket prices are going UP next year. Dang. Yep, 2011 was a big giant ball of poo. Glad to see it go. Don't let the door hit you on the way out, 2011.
Here's to 2012. It's gotta be better. It's just got to.
