Ole Miss has its home opener against Arkansas State at 3 p.m. this afternoon. It looks like a beautiful day for baseball. As I was driving the kids to school this morning they rolled the back windows down as kids fascinated by power windows are prone to do, and as the air wafted through my junkie old suburban I couldn't help but notice that it felt like spring. It felt like baseball. The morning sky had a hue and blueness to it - a spring-like brightness. You know the look. It's hard to describe, but easy to recognize. Spring is almost here, and today we're getting a sneak preview. It's baseball weather. The kind of weather that sets the perfect scene for the sounds of of baseballs snapping into leather gloves and bats making whatever that new noise is they make since the dismissal of the old aluminum. I love baseball sounds. They are the sounds of spring. I'm so glad it's back!

Soon the college kids will be throwing frisbee in the Grove and reading at those strategically placed picnic tables. Wearing t-shirts and shorts to class and enjoying the 18 miles per hour speed limit with their windows permanently down. It's a good time of year - the time of year when you come home from work refreshed because there's still some daylight left to enjoy. At my house we'll be in street in front of the house helping the kids perfect their newly acquired bicycle riding skills. They're girls and they have pink bikes, and they'll definitely spend some time riding them, but in celebration of spring I might have to go buy a ball and a couple gloves on the way home today, so they too can one day associate beautiful days like this one with the beautiful sport baseball. After all, they were made for one another.

Freshman righty Sam Smith is drawing his first start for Ole Miss. He's 6-4, 210 and full of potential. Scouting him would be a great excuse to play a little office hooky and get out there and enjoy the day. Hope a few of you do just that.
